Mother Teresa Biography

Mother Teresa (1910 – 1997), born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, was a Catholic nun of Albanian ethnicity and Indian citizenship, who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India in 1950.

For over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity's expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries.

"Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person" ~ Mother Teresa (1910-1997)

What we do ?

Creating Lasting Change

MTS works on cutting poverty off at its roots. We provide tools for sustainable change to the people most vulnerable to hunger, violence and disease.

Mother Teresa Society is the first local based NGO in Kosova. It is established on May 10th 1990 with aim to alleviate the poverty, create a solidarity chain of survival, commencing during the political and violent repression measures applied by the regime of the time, and continuing to do so even today!

Mission: principles of charity, tolerance, love toward all people regardless of the ethnic background and peace building based on justice and reconciliation. Vision of our organization is to be an assisting factor in building open civil society where human values are cultivated and live freely in peace, mutual respect and tolerance.

Throughout the years, Mother Teresa Society was the only entity responding to the community needs. Until 1990, the Kosovo Civil Society did not exist and Mother Teresa Society has turned a new page in history of Kosova by engaging citizens in voluntarily network in implementation of activities. From 1990 up to 1998, MTS has acted as the Ministry of Social Welfare by providing humanitarian assistance, as the Ministry of Health by creating a chain of 96 mobile clinics and Maternity, and as the Ministry of Education by supporting the educational system and providing basic conditions.

The war 1998-99 left Kosovo as being a highly dependent country, relying on the international community for financial and technical assistance, and with the global economic crisis, Kosovo's financial income reduced further.

According to the 2014 World Bank Study, Kosovo currently ranks as the poorest country in the Balkan region, with more than 60% of Kosovo’s population being poor. Further, the study finds that the unemployment rate in Kosovo is 45%, and this study defines poverty as having less than €45 [euro] per person per month. According to the Kosovo Institute for Social Policies (KISP), 7% of the population is “extremely poor,” living on less than €0.93 per day. Most of the population lives in rural towns outside the capital city, Prishtina, and inefficient, near-subsistence farming is commonplace.

The heart of our work

Families in need – men, women, children, elderly - are a vital part of MTS’s community-based efforts to improve their basic living conditions, increase access to quality health care and expand economic opportunity for all. MTS aims to help by building on an open Civil society, where the values of all the people will be respected and cultivated regardless of nationality, religion or race where the people will live side by side with mutual respect and tolerance.

Through the assistance of various donors, we try to be close to the people in need. Each year we support approximately 6000 families with food, clothing and hygiene kits. MTS seeks to develop the small family economy and infrastructure in order to encourage families to build a social and economic sustainability. We want to build a multiethnic democratic society by advocating reconciliation and peace building among all ethnicities, in addition to give a voice to the most vulnerable families of Kosova by advocating on their behalf and raise the public awareness that there is another side of Kosova as well.

Where we work

Mother Teresa Society operates throughout Kosova and abroad. Its HQ is based in Prishtina, capital of Kosovo, and along with its 5 regional centers/offices coordinates, monitors and implements number of projects and activities. Mother Teresa Society has its President, Assembly as leading structure and Executive body which in collaboration with its offices implements projects. In total we have a staff of 12 hard working individuals, and a large network of volunteers - covering the entire Kosovo territory.

MTS Is There

We help communities and work to ensure they receive food, water, shelter, healthcare and other relief supplies when they need them most.

The activities of organization currently are oriented in following fields:

  • Socio-economic projects
  • Infrastructure support of communities
  • Civil Society lead projects
  • Humanitarian projects

Help MTS fight poverty and respond to desperate need by making a gift today. With your support we can:

  • Help poor families send their children to school
  • Help people learn skills to start and sustain their own businesses
  • Deliver emergency aid when disaster strikes
  • Help marginalized women build a better life for themselves, their families, and their communities

In order to bring about lasting change, we work with local, national and international governments to support and enact policies that address the underlying causes of poverty.

All people, everywhere in the world, have the right to a life of dignity. This means a life free from poverty, violence, discrimination or human rights violations.

In times of conflict or disaster, we address immediate survival needs directly following an emergency — and help individuals, families and communities rebuild their lives in the weeks, months and years to come.

Join the MTS Network to find out how you can get involved in your own community while making a difference in the lives of people around Kosovo.
